A Parent speaks
I spoke to Enda on 1st October 2012 for a few hours about the ALL Programme and we decided to sign-up Rian for it that afternoon. We were initially very sceptical that Rian would actually sit in one place for more than two minutes and type.
For the first few sessions, one of us held his hand and basically typed the answers for him even though he had some control as it was his finger that was typing. Within a matter of days, he knew the answers to type and we just held his wrist and after another short while he could type the answers himself. We were just amazed with the speed that he took control of the programme. He knew the correct answers to type and actually typed them. Our little boy, who will be 7 years old this month, was typing long words with spaces and even putting in apostrophes!
Whenever we get the latest chapter of Toy Story, we help him if he doesn’t know the correct answer by either telling him the correct word or spelling it. After that he flies it on his own. He touch-types the answers, i.e. he uses one finger only to type the answers. It is great to hear as he speaks out the correct answer before typing it. Rian does the ALL Programme every day or evening and it is 40 minutes that we know he is doing something productive. For him it is enjoyable work. He is learning unknownst to himself. When we know that he is getting bored with a particular chapter, we let Enda know and Rian progresses to another one. This keeps his interest and also he is learning more vocabulary.
The ALL Programme has confirmed to us what a strong visual learner our son is. We still have many challenges to overcome. His spoken language is usually to request something with 1-2 words but the ALL Programme has confirmed for us how smart our son actually is. He has a great understanding of language and also of the concepts and story-lines presented in Toy Story, or more recently in “Wreck-it Ralph”. This has been the most successful intervention that we have done so far with our son.
